'The Covenant of Water' by Abraham Verghese- A mini review

When I picked up this book, the length of it was quite daunting. Moreover, I hadn’t read any book by Abraham Verghese before, which made this choice an uncertain one.

But as I read through the carefully crafted story, I couldn’t help but be captivated by his narration, the way he painted a tapestry of imageries related to Kerala, and depicted Kerala of the 1900s. Generations of the Parambil family bound together by one secret, wow! Just like the waters near Parambil, like the air around this mystery, I wafted through the story like never before. Today, I know them all, Valyamachi, JoJo, Digby, Philipose…. and everyone else. I am at Parambil, among them, watching their generations tell this story, a story of pain, longing, love and secrets.

This would be my book recommendation for this year (so far, till I find another gem).

I hear ‘Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese’ is better than this? Ah! Whats stopping me anyways!

I thank a random bus stop conversation I had with my colleague, who made a fleeting reference to this book, which had my curiosity right there.
